The Lunar Command shoe features space age technology, in fact Nike were both inspired and influenced by NASA when designing their footwear. These technical innovations feature across the full spectrum of Nike sport shoes from running, basketball, football and of course golf.
I must admit I had to do some research into Lunarlon and Flywire as it is not immediately obvious what they actually are and what the benefits are from using these materials in a golf shoe. Let’s start with Lunarlon.
Lunarlon was inspired by the astronauts bouncing along on the moon, as it provides a spring like cushion for your feet. Lunarlon absorbs shocks better and as a result prevents fatigue. It also distributes the impact of walking evenly across your feet which means there is less pressure applied to one area of the shoe.
As a result there is increased comfort which is important in a golf shoe considering you will be walking in them for at least four hours; it also prevents wear and tear in one particular area of the shoe making them a lot more durable.
Flywire is an idea that was taken from the Vectran material used in astronaut’s space suits. Flywire is lightweight yet a very strong material, it removes mass in the upper part of the shoe making it more lightweight and flexible whilst not compromising on strength. It works much the same way like cables work on a suspension bridge.
The Lunar Command shoe features a rubber outsole that is one inch thick at the heel of the shoe. The flex grooves provide better traction control through your golf swing. There are six Champ spikes in the sole of the shoe that are replaceable, remember to check that your cleats are tightened before you play so that you do not lose one after your first round wearing them.
A cleat wrench is not included with the shoes however we do sell these separately and for only €3.50 it is worth investing in one. For maximum performance it is recommended that you change your cleats twice annually, although do keep an eye on them as some cleats may wear more than others. If you leave them on your shoes over a sustained period of time it can be more difficult to remove worn cleats and may require a wrench to prize them out.
The Lunar Command shoe from Nike is lightweight, comfortable and waterproof, although the price is €101.95 is does feature both Lunarlon and flywire technology which adds considerably to the comfort, durability and longevity of the shoe. A good investment without being outlandishly expensive and highly recommended from Cole Golf.
