Choosing a golf ball to suit your game
There are a number of considerations to take into account when choosing your golf ball. They include:
- Distance
- Feel
- Durability
- Short game control
- Driver and iron spin
The higher the quality of the ball the thinner the coating around the core. The thinner coating gives you more feel but slightly less distance. Titleist's Pro V1 and Srixon's Z Star ball are two good examples of high quality tour standard balls with the best short game control, spin, and feel.
The improved feel is proffered by lower handicap golfers, particularly in and around the green as they can control the shot a lot better and add spin to the ball.
Ball recomendation for beginners
It is recommended that absolute beginners use a less expensive, more durable ball that will maximise distance.
Of course there is also an increased chance that beginners will lose more balls starting off. A good budget option is the Pinnacle Golf balls. The Pinnacle balls are made for distance and not bad quality either.
For mid handicappers the Srixon AD333 is a good option as there is a good mix of feel, distance and durability.
Ball choices for different times of the year
The time of year you are playing can also make a difference on the type of ball you decide to play. You can lose some feel when the ground conditions become a little more soggier.
Therefore lower handicap golfers can go down a grade from the top graded ball (much like changing your shoes to suit the ground conditions). The Titleist NXT ball is longer and more durable thank the Pro V1.
As the daylight also begins to fade it is a good idea to have some bright coloured balls in your bag. Particularly for the last few closing holes. A sleeve (pack of 3 golf balls) is all you will need and is available from most golf shops, including Cole Golf.
The new Pinnacle Bling balls come in four fun colours, you definately won't have any problens finding these golf balls.
Mix and match your ball choices
Cole Golf allow you to mix and match the same ball in different colours, for example instead of buying a dozen white AD333 balls you can buy 9 white and three orange or six white and six orange.
The Srixon AD333 comes in white and orange and the Srixon Z Star comes in pure white or a bright yellow.
In summary your choice of ball will depend on your handicap, the time of year you are playing and the amount of daylight you are playing in.
